Two-Level Deck Replacement in Bloomington, Indiana

New two-level wood deck with an angled built-in bench seating wall behind a brick home

A worn-out deck rebuilt for entertaining

This Bloomington, Indiana family loved their backyard: a big shade tree, a view of the open field behind the house and plenty of room to spread out. Their deck was another story. The boards had weathered to gray, the lower level was showing its age, and it no longer fit the way they wanted to use the space.

Where it started

The original deck had two levels, with an angled lower section sitting over a gravel bed. Years of weather had left the boards worn and the trim and fascia breaking down.

Built right from the framing up

We removed the old deck and built new framing for both levels. Along the way, we routed the downspouts into drain pipe beneath the deck so roof water is carried away from the foundation instead of soaking the ground under the new boards.

What we built

  • Two levels. An upper level along the house and a lower level that angles out toward the yard.
  • Built-in bench seating. Angled seating walls separate the two levels and add plenty of seating without blocking the view.
  • A hot tub surround. We framed the new deck around the family’s hot tub so it sits flush and finished.
  • Picture-frame borders. Border boards around the edges and openings give the deck a clean, finished look.
  • Wide wraparound steps. New steps lead down to the walkway and out to the yard.

The result
